Call for papers published for IMCAs Dubai-based safety, environment and legislation seminar

Published on 11 July 2012

A call for papers has been published for the 2013 International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) safety, environment and legislation seminar, which will be held on 19 – 20 February 2013 in Dubai, UAE with the theme ‘Major incident prevention in marine operations’. A template for submissions is available from events@imca-int.com, and the deadline for submissions is 7 September.

“Our theme provides plenty of scope for would-be presenters,” explains IMCA’s Technical Director, Jane Bugler. “Topics may include a wide range of safety, environmental, health and legislation issues, including successful initiatives to improve company/industry performance, current issues and lessons learnt from incidents and near-misses. While presentations across this spectrum will be considered, the focus this year will follow on from our 2012 event’s theme – Risk and Impact in Marine Operations – and we are looking for presentations on the prevention of major incident events in marine operations. As ever, the seminar will be focused on marine construction and vessel activities.”

This year IMCA is particularly interested in papers covering case studies, company initiatives and lessons learnt on the following:

  • Safety & Environment
    • Appropriate control measures to mitigate major incident hazards;
    • How is major incident analysis being addressed;
    • Major incident investigation;
    • Safety leadership both on and offshore;
    • Workforce involvement;
    • Case studies;
    • Asset integrity;
    • Major incident emergency readiness;
    • Major environmental incident preventions.
  • Legislation
    • Class, flag and coastal state regulation of major hazard events;

Looking back
The 2012 safety seminar, held in March 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil attracted 180+ participants from around the world, including onshore and offshore management and operational staff responsible for safety. A similar range of participants is expected in Dubai, where the seminar will be open to members and non-members alike. Online registration will open in late November.

The format will again include a range of presentations and small group discussion sessions, which have both proved popular and have helped to move the debate on in a number of areas, identifying actions for participants generally and for the IMCA Safety, Environment & Legislation (SEL) committee to take forward.

Further information on all aspects of the seminar is available from events@imca-int.com and from www.imca-int.com/events and from the association at IMCA, 52 Grosvenor Gardens, London SW1W 0AU, UK. Tel: +44 (0)20 7824 5520; Fax: +44 (0)20 7824 5521.
