From the President – July 2013

The offshore industry is remembering the Piper Alpha tragedy of 6 July 1988, as we approach 25 years since the fateful incident. Our thoughts return to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. The memories we have of the disaster should continuously be used to work toward prevention of anything similar. As with wars, the past must be utilised to inform the future. Following Piper Alpha there was a change in the UK regulatory regime offshore to a more general goal setting approach, with the focus on major accident prevention. Similar approaches in legislation have been

From the President – March 2013

Welcome to my first Making Waves message, as I pick up the baton and say my thanks to the work of the outgoing President, my good friend Andy Woolgar. IMCA’s role in the industry has been an important one and there remains much for us to do. We have come a long way since our beginnings as AODC and DPVOA and grown massively across the last 10 years under the stewardship of Hugh Williams, to reach current membership numbers in excess of 900. With a change of President and Chief Executive and the end of 2012, it was felt right

Two new pocket safety cards From IMCA

Two new pocket safety cards have been published by the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA). IMCA’s 22nd card covers electrical hazards attracting attention with its message”electricity can kill or severely injure people and cause damage to equipment”. It details the hazards, and provides bullet points on assessing and reducing the risks of electrical shock. The 23rd card covers noise, warning that too much noise – or prolonged exposure to it – can cause permanent and disabling hearing damage, and has some handy pointers for assessing if there is too much noise in a workplace, how to reduce exposure to noise,

From the President – December 2012

My 2 year term as IMCA President finishes at the end of 2012. The role is honorary but includes chairing the IMCA Overall Management Committee (OMC) and Council. OMC is responsible for IMCA’s successful management, creating direction and working with the secretariat to deliver the association’s work programme, whilst Council provides support and guidance to OMC from senior representatives of IMCA’s ICO members. I have enjoyed the role, and have seen firsthand and been impressed by IMCA’s delivery at a number of venues and events. The gestation of some of what we have delivered during my term, for example IMCA

From the President – September 2012

Sustainability is an ‘in vogue’ word – so much so that we have used it for the theme of this year’s IMCA annual conference ‘Marine and subsea operations: a culture of sustainability’, being held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on 28-29 November 2012. Join in the debate by registering for the event and mixing with your global peers. What is the marine contracting sector’s view on sustainability? Delivery of a sustainable performance requires strategic planning over a considerable period of time, which addresses safety and our environment as its primary goals. Investment in people and enabling assets further underpins sustainability, as

IMCA to hold competence seminar in Dubai

There has been an increasing global emphasis on the importance of using competent personnel – something that is continuing despite economic swings in the last few years. The offshore construction industry needs a lot more personnel and the emphasis on them being, or gaining further training to become, competent is growing all the time. Contractors are called upon by clients, regulators and others to demonstrate that the individuals working for them, particularly in safety-critical roles, are competent. The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), working through and in consultation with its members, has developed an extensive framework of guidance that its

IMCA produces lifting operations DVD

Almost no work can be carried out in any marine environment without a lifting process being involved. It is an essential component of all offshore operations. And, just as in good seamanship, the skills and knowledge required for lifting operations have to be gained through experience and training as well as from the study of written guidance. The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has produced a DVD entitled ‘Safe Lifting’ (IMCA SEL 030) to illustrate essential components of successful and safe lifting operations, and provide yet another step on the all-important road to ‘zero incidents’. The DVD is based on

IMCA's New guidance on mooring practice

Ships enter and leave ports regularly. Tying up a ship when alongside a berth or another vessel is potentially a very hazardous operation, unless simple and effective safety procedures are followed. ‘Mooring Practice Safety Guidance for Offshore Vessels when Alongside in Ports and Harbours’ (IMCA SEL 029/M 214), the latest publication from the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) is designed to ensure safe mooring with zero incidents. “Mooring accidents are always on the list of personal injury accidents, often resulting in severe injuries or even fatalities,” explains Jane Bugler, IMCA’s Technical Director. “Indeed, many people who read this guidance will
