IMO Secretary-General Seeks UN Support Over “Keyworker” Designation for Seafarers

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has asked the United Nations system agencies to support IMO in its request to governments to declare seafarers, port personnel and other crucial maritime workers as key personnel. Mr. Lim made the plea during a virtual meeting (1 April) with other UN chiefs and the UN Secretary-General.  The meeting addressed the impact of COVID-19 on, among other things, disruption and restrictions to travel, trade flows, global logistics, supply of food, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment. The web-based portal is now open for submission of 2019 IMCA Contractor members’ safety statistics.  Please browse to www.imca-int.com/data/safety/submit, log in using your IMCA company login details and click on “Submit Data”.  You will then be taken to an easy to use web-based form. IMCA has temporarily suspended diving supervisor certification exams in Mumbai due to concerns over the probity of certain examinations undertaken in the Mumbai area. An investigation is underway, and a number of air diving supervisor certificates have been suspended. IMCA consulting on forthcoming updates to the eCMID and eMISW templates

IMCA has circulated draft revised versions of the eCMID (IMCA M 149 Issue 11) and eMISW (IMCA M 189 Issue 4) inspection templates.  These provide advance notice of changes, as well as providing an opportunity for users to comment on the question sets prior to publication, planned for early September. An IMCA workgroup, initially formed of members of its Offshore Survey Division Management Committee, has developed an easy, cost-effective and measurable way to assess and verify the competence of freelance personnel agency workers and sub-contractors. IMCA’s Technical Manager, Mark Ford,and the Chairman of eCMID Committee, Stephen Birt, gave a presentation on ‘IMCA eCMID – An Independent ISM Health Check for your Ship’, to the International Marine Organization’s Maritime Safety Committee on 21 May. The presentation covered the importance of eCMID to provide a regular health check on a vessel’s Safety Management System. Use of the eCMID system has grown rapidly during 2018, with over 40% more inspection reports live in the database since January and more than 2,500 vessels now registered.

New funding arrangements for IMCA eCMID system

Dear colleagues, We are making improvements to the eCMID vessel inspection database in response to the marked increase in use of the offshore vessels’ inspection scheme. Over 2,300 vessels from more than 1,000 owners and operators are now listed on the eCMID database, and this is consulted by more than 3,800 users each year. Publication ordering made simple at IMCA

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) website now includes the new IMCA Store for online ordering. Implementation of the system sees the catalogue of logbooks, competence records and other printed items all available ensuring that members around the world can place and pay for orders at their convenience. The IMCA Store features both a secure online payment system through PayPal and automatic calculation of delivery costs to the country of choice. We trust that our members will find this online system to be an efficient and seamless way of purchasing our publications.

Changes to IMCA IT services team

IMCA has appointed Adam Hugo as its new IT Services Supervisor & System Developer. In this role, he is responsible for the support and continuous improvement of a variety of services, including: the secretariat IT network; SharePoint sites used by committees and workgroups; and the eCMID vessel inspection system. The developer aspect of the role encompasses our website, with new features in the pipeline, expanded use of SharePoint functionality; making more efficient use of IMCA data; and liaising with the external eCMID development team.
