Competence seminar being held by IMCA in Mumbai

Published on 17 April 2015

Competence & Training is a core activity of the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), providing guidance on competence assurance and assessment, training, and information on recruitment and careers in offshore, marine and underwater engineering – and it is a topic that will come under the seminar spotlight next week in Mumbai when IMCA stages a competence seminar at the Sofitel Hotel on the afternoon of Tuesday 21 April.

“Our competence assurance and assessment guidance provides members with a framework for creating their own in-house schemes for assessing and recording the competence of people working in safety-critical and other roles,” explains IMCA’s Technical Director, Jane Bugler.”It is especially designed for members who need to demonstrate the competence of their staff to clients and regulators.”

The Competence Seminar, which is open to members and non-members alike, follows on from IMCA’s members-only Middle East &* India Section meeting, will see IMCA’s Technical Adviser, Neil Evans outlining the role and activity of IMCA’s Competence and Training core committee. He will then speak about the IMCA competence timeline, and provide an overview of the IMCA competence framework.

Mike Silvester of Horizon Geosciences and Darren Male of Fugro Group will then deliver presentations on ‘Establishing effective Competence Management Systems’.

Following a networking coffee break (an essential of all IMCA events), there will be a two group discussions. One on ‘Demonstrating Competence’ and the other on ‘Personnel and Training’; bullet points on each have been prepared to help discussion.

The first group will consider the following issues on ‘Demonstrating Competence’:

  • What factors contribute to competence and how do we link them?
  • What role does training play in the process?
  • How do can we demonstrate and measure competence?
  • Benefits to a company with a competence scheme in place?
  • Barriers in establishing a scheme and how can they be overcome?

There are five bullet points to stimulate discussion in the ‘Personnel and Training discussion:

  • Skills shortages in the current climate?
  • Is training provision an issue?
  • Are the education sector and industry collaborating?
  • Are companies doing anything different to train and retain people?
  • How is the downturn affecting recruitment practices in general?

Each group will provide feedback at the end of the day, and then ‘An Evening with IMCA’ will be held at the Mumbai Cricket Association Recreation Centre featuring fine food, entertainment and networking.

Registration for both events is essential and those wishing to attend either or both should email events@imca-int.com.
